So I’m working on a Portrait Series called “…and then some” that speaks about my journey, not only to Black Nationalism but to Blackness as an identity. For many years I didn’t think myself to be Black in any real way. It was just in the background. Being Gay made me feel so far removed from the Black experience that gayness was my whole identity.
When I started going to an PWI I became more aware of my Blackness, and when Trayvon Martin was murdered I woke up completely. I started to surround myself with nation builders and Black leaders and earning about the real history of our people. This series is about that experience and how it has since completed dictated the lens in which I see the world. Being able to Photograph Trayvon Martin’s older brother, Jahvaris Fulton (Pictured above on the left), was definitely a full circle moment for me. I plan on photographing every person who contributed to my Nationalist journey. I’m very excited to share it with you guys!!
